Insights about Cleaning Your Water Tanks at Home

One of the most forgotten parts of proper home maintenance is the cleaning out of water tanks regularly. Over time, dirt, rust and other particles can build up at the bottom tank, blocking water flow and causing your tank to operate inefficiently. That is why it is important to clean out your water reservoir to ensure proper flow and extend the operating life of your unit. This article aims to offer helpful insights about cleaning home water tanks.

If your home receives hard water, tanks must be cleaned more often due to a high concentration of minerals. If these minerals build up, they will accumulate inside and can block water flow. Flushing at least twice a year is recommended for hard water storage container. If you noticed that your reservoir is expelling unusual amounts of mineral sediment when you flush the tank, it is best to invest in a home water softener system. Tanks that are situated in a location with naturally soft water will only experience less build-up of sediments. Therefore, it only requires flushing once in every six months.

Flushing out a water container with a water hose is generally sufficient to clear the unit. It is also advisable to remove the valves for deep cleaning purposes. After draining the tank, take off the valves and insert a hooked wire to check if there are dirt build-ups. In some cases, it can be helpful to use a long tool such as screwdrivers to remove large pieces of sediment. Lastly, clean out the sediment and change the valve.
