Creating and Maintaining a Bog Garden
Beautifying the home’s outdoors is one of the goals of every nature lover. This is often easily achieved by having a beautiful and exciting bog garden where you can display personally selected plants. For those unfortunate enough to have a low area that remains wet year-round, it is time to turn that space into a blessing.
Site Selection – Choose a sunny area where the ground can be levelled without much difficulty. A hose or rope may be used to mark the perimeter of the area. Usually, the best location is one near the edge of a water garden.

Bog Construction – Dig to a depth of 12 to 14 inches and remove the soil to create a basin. Galvanised hardware cloth, solid wooden barrier, screening, or other rust-resistant material is lined to prevent tunnelling rodents or moles from infesting the plot. Be sure to leave a good deal of excess plastic along the edges so there is something to hold the moist. It may be trimmed once the soil has settled. Thereafter, you can add ¼ sand and ¾ peat moss, both of which should be dampened and mixed thoroughly.
Winter and Spring Cleaning – It is best to tolerate dry leaves during the frosty season and skip some maintenance tasks such as cleaning up dead foliage so the greens would not grow thinner. Once the snow starts to melt, there is nothing much to do during this time except to remove leaf debris. Also, do not forget to replant those that have heaved from the cold months.
General Maintenance Tips – Although constant saturation is not necessary, it is important not to allow the soil mix to dry out. For your convenience and to deliver efficient irrigation, install soaker hoses just three inches below the surface and 2 feet apart from each other.
